Lions UDFA Spotlight: Steele Chambers has a WWE name, but a Lions play style that could get him on the 53-man roster
Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch-USA TODAY NETWORK

Here's a guy that I didn't think the Detroit Lions would have a chance at unless they drafted him. In fact, I mocked him to the Lions in the fifth round of one of my mock drafts this year.

When you see Chambers, the first thing that's really hard to not think of is the WWE. A name like Steele Chambers is a name that you could have easily seen Jimmy Hart managing in the 80's in a Saturday Night's Main Even match against Randy Savage.

The next thing that pops up is how much he fits with the Lions special teams. Chambers is a bit undersized at the linebacker spot and that's because he's only been a linebacker for a few years. He was previously a running back for Ohio State. He had 28 carries for 221 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes offense. He didn't get a lot of touches.

As a linebacker he carried his weight on the team and led Ohio State in tackles with 83 in 2023. He was a starter for three years and made third team All Big-Ten last season.

A spot just opened for a linebacker on special teams. The Lions lost long time special teams ace Anthony Pittman in free agency when he signed with the Commanders. Chambers' speed and tackling ability could give him a shot to make things happen on special teams. Plus he'd get the chance to play along side the best special teams player in the NFL in Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

The thing that could prevent Chambers from making the 53-man roster is that there is just so many linebackers on this team right now. Jack Campbell, Alex Anzalone, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez are locks to make the team. I don't know if they'd want to carry a sixth guy. If they do, is that Mitchell Agude? Who they signed to a futures deal after a year on the practice squad.

If that's the case, I still see the Lions making sure they keep Chambers in some capacity. He's a top candidate to make the Lions practice squad this year if he doesn't show enough to get him on the 53-man roster as a special teamer.

Whenever he's done with football, I'll still very much will be keeping an eye on him as wrestling fan. You just can't let a name like that go to waste. I might just go create him on WWE 2K24 right now.
